Kathy Smith has been called a “Fitness Titan,” for good reason. From her iconic library of exercise videos to her current breakthrough performance monitor and all-in-one app, she is always on the cutting-edge of fitness trends.
The daughter of an airforce pilot, Kathy grew up in Brazil, Alabama, Hawaii, Texas and Illinois, before finally settling in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s - the birthplace of the health and fitness movement. During her early days in LA, Kathy explored her passion for exercise, first as an avid runner (she ran her first marathon in 1975), and later attending fitness classes alongside future fitness phenom Jane Fonda. Kathy soon began teaching her own class, combining calisthenics with aerobics, and was quickly approached by a record producer to launch an exercise album: an LP with Kathy's audio instructions and a poster demonstrating the moves.
The success of Kathy's first LP soon gave way to VHS workouts - and the rest is fitness history. Over the next 30 years, Kathy built an empire, selling more than 20 million DVDs - an honor that placed her in the Video Hall of Fame. She has sold over $500 million in products, from kettlebells to yoga mats to her newly-released Bodimetrics performance monitor, a revolutionary one-of-a kind hand-held device that gives you the ability to access vital health metrics in under 20 seconds. And, just in time for New Year’s Resolutions, Kathy developed a 90-day weight loss app, "ReShape.” This wellness program offers downloadable workouts, food plans, shopping lists, hundreds of recipes, and is topped off with BrainTap, a brain-based approach to enhancing focus and relaxation.
Kathy’s mission to help people live life to the fullest continues to inspire and craft her work. Kathy's work has always reflected her own life experiences and passion for helping others. In the late '80s, she was among the first to educate mainstream America on the restorative power of yoga. She has offered her favorite exercise routines with an ever-expanding audience as a correspondent on The Today Show and a columnist for The Los Angeles Times. And when The Oprah Winfrey Show did an episode on menopause, they turned to Kathy, who shared her own experience and techniques for overcoming those challenges in her New York Times bestselling book Moving Through Menopause.
With a passion for educating girls on sports and fitness, Kathy joined forces with Billie Jean King as a Founders Circle member of the Women's Sports Foundation. And Kathy's mission to "inspire the best in all people" has been recognized by countless organizations, including the Los Angeles County Commission for Women, who named Kathy their 2011 Woman of the Year for her work educating communities. She is also a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from IDEA, the world's largest organization of fitness professionals.
Kathy is the proud mother of two young women: Kate (an Olympian-runner-in-training), and Perrie (a New Yorker currently working for a nonprofit, Every Mother Counts). Her latest passion is reflected in her speaking engagements — Train Your Body, Train Your Brain. When she's not on the road, Kathy can usually be found hiking or skiing in the mountains of Park City, Utah.
